# Which stack would you pick for an interactive AI app today?

You're starting a greenfield project. The brief: an interactive web app, background workers, and AI agents calling Anthropic, OpenAI, or Mistral. Which stack do you pick?

For existing teams, this isn't a real question. If you're a Java shop, switching to .NET is pain for no good reason. If you're a Python shop, moving to Node.js changes nothing that matters. You use what you have.

The interesting case is the new team. A handful of people with different backgrounds, each carrying their own ecosystems. I know 5 of them well: Python, PHP, Common Lisp, Node.js, and Go. Most developers I know carry more than one. Put a few of us in a room with a blank repo, and the question becomes very real.

## You still want an ecosystem

An assumption worth stating first: even with coding agents writing much of the code, you should lean on libraries and frameworks as much as possible.

Yes, dependencies mean supply chain management: keeping up with releases, watching advisories, paying the maintenance tax. But you pay that tax anyway. You're not reinventing Linux, or your web server, or your queue. The richer the ecosystem, the less code you own, and code you don't own is code you don't maintain.

For this kind of app, ecosystem maturity comes down to 3 axes: AI and agents, background workers, and interactive UI.

## A quick tour of the ecosystems

| Ecosystem | AI and agents | Workers | Interactive UI |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------- | -------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| PHP (Symfony) | `symfony/ai` | Messenger | Symfony UX, Live Components, Turbo, Mercure |
| PHP (Laravel) | Prism, Laragent | Horizon | Livewire, Reverb |
| Elixir (Phoenix) | Growing | Oban, the BEAM | LiveView |
| Python (Django) | The AI language | Celery | Channels, less mature |
| .NET | Semantic Kernel, heavy Microsoft investment | Hangfire | Blazor Server |
| Go | Google's ADK | Goroutines, built in | Thin |
| Node.js | Vercel AI SDK | Less mature | Next.js and friends, by far the strongest |
| Java | Strong | Strong | Not there yet |

A few notes from someone who's spent real time in several of these.

`symfony/ai` is younger than the rest of the Symfony ecosystem, but you can say that about the AI layer of every ecosystem here. Laravel has quietly assembled a complete answer: Livewire for live components, Reverb for WebSockets, Horizon for workers, Prism for talking to LLMs, and Laragent for autonomous agents.

Phoenix LiveView is arguably the original interactive web app, and the BEAM was built for exactly this kind of concurrent, connection-heavy workload. Python is the AI language, even if Channels never made Django feel as live as LiveView does. Node.js owns the interactive UI story, with Vercel pushing hard, but its worker story is thinner than elsewhere. Go gives you workers for free with goroutines, and now Google's ADK for agents, but the interactive UI ecosystem isn't there. Java is the one I know least; AI and workers are strong there, with too much corporate weight behind them not to be.

None of these is a wrong answer. That's the problem.

## The criteria changed

Before coding agents, the deciding factor was team expertise. When you're building something new, you go with what you know. That single fact decided most stack choices for the past few decades.

That picture has changed. The coding agent writes most of the code now. You still need enough familiarity to review what it writes, and that might narrow 5 options down to 3. But "how well can we read this language" stopped being the major factor, because you can train yourself into reading a new language much faster than you can train yourself into operating one.

The question that replaced it: how well can we run this application?

Where does it run, Linux or Windows? Which platforms will host it? What does it cost? Can it run on your laptop? If your app needs 64GB of memory to boot, your laptop has opinions. (I'm not saying all Java applications need 64GB. Don't make me say what I'm not saying.) And if you pick Elixir, wonderful ecosystem, but the list of platforms that host it well is short. You're narrowing your options before you've written a line.

## Eliminate, then choose

For this specific app, the operational lens does most of the elimination for me. Go falls off first: the interactive UI ecosystem isn't mature enough. If workers matter a lot, Node.js gets uncomfortable. You can do it, but you'd be swimming against the ecosystem's maturity.

After that, taste still counts. I love Common Lisp for the interactive development environment it gives me, not for its library ecosystem. Developers' preferences don't stop mattering because an agent writes the code.

But the biggest shift is this: switching technologies is easier than it has ever been, which means the ability to switch matters more than it ever has. That's why I care about platforms that don't pick a language for you. AWS qualifies, at a very different altitude. [Upsun](https://upsun.com) sits at the same level as Vercel or Heroku without narrowing what you can run; every stack on this list works there. The limit is your team, not your platform.

Pick the stack your team can run. And keep the door open.
